Citizens Must Learn to Disagree

Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to disagree.

Today, every political conversation feels like a battlefield.

If someone supports a government policy, they’re labelled.

If someone criticizes it, they’re labelled too.

Nuance has become a casualty.

We’ve reached a point where asking a question is often mistaken for taking a side.

And that’s dangerous.

Because democracy was never designed to be an echo chamber.

It was designed to be an argument.

Not the kind filled with insults and shouting.

The kind built on ideas, evidence, and the willingness to challenge one another.

Every right we enjoy today exists because someone once disagreed with the status quo.

Freedom of speech.

Universal voting rights.

Labour protections.

Civil rights.

Educational reforms.

None of these emerged from silence.

They emerged because people questioned those in power and because societies were willing to debate difficult ideas.

Yet today, disagreement is increasingly treated as disloyalty.

If you criticize the government, some assume you’re anti-national.

If you question the opposition, others assume you’ve changed sides.

Why have we become so uncomfortable with independent thinking?

A healthy democracy doesn’t ask citizens to choose between blind support and blind opposition.

It asks them to think.

To question.

To evaluate every issue on its own merit.

Supporting one policy shouldn’t require defending every policy.

Criticizing one decision shouldn’t mean rejecting everything a government has done.

Politics is not a cricket match where your team must be defended no matter what.

It is about the lives of millions of people.

That deserves better than tribal loyalty.

Social media has made this even harder.

Algorithms reward outrage.

Calm conversations rarely trend.

The loudest voices often receive the most attention, while thoughtful disagreement disappears beneath hashtags and headlines.

The result is predictable.

We stop debating ideas.

We start debating identities.

Instead of asking, “Is this policy effective?”

We ask, “Who proposed it?”

Instead of examining evidence, we defend camps.

Instead of solving problems, we compete to win arguments.

But democracies don’t become stronger because everyone agrees.

They become stronger because people can disagree without treating each other as enemies.

Citizens have a responsibility that goes beyond voting once every few years.

We must ask difficult questions.

Demand transparency.

Challenge misinformation.

Hold every political party to the same standard.

And perhaps most importantly, be willing to change our minds when the evidence changes.

That isn’t weakness.

It’s intellectual honesty.

No government should fear informed criticism.

No opposition should fear informed scrutiny.

And no citizen should outsource their thinking to political parties, television debates, or social media feeds.

The future of democracy will not depend only on better politicians.

It will depend on better citizens.

Citizens who can argue passionately without abandoning respect.

Citizens who value truth more than tribalism.

Citizens who understand that disagreement is not a threat to democracy.

It is one of democracy’s greatest strengths.

When was the last time you changed your opinion after listening to someone you disagreed with?

If that hasn’t happened in a long time, perhaps the question isn’t whether democracy is becoming more polarized.

Perhaps it’s whether we’ve stopped listening.

Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to disagree.
