Chandra Bose died on this day.

A plane crash near Taihoku airfield in Taiwan.
Severe burns.
Death in a Japanese military hospital a few hours later.
He was forty-eight years old.

That is the story the world was told.
Many still question parts of it.
But the life that ended, or appeared to end, on that day needs no controversy to remain powerful.

Subhas Chandra Bose loved India more than he loved position.

He had risen high inside the Congress.
In 1938 he was elected President at Haripura.
In 1939 he won again at Tripuri, defeating the candidate backed by Mahatma Gandhi.
The victory should have strengthened him.
Instead it exposed the deep gap.

Bose wanted faster, more militant action against the British.
He believed the world war that was coming offered a rare chance.
He wanted the Congress to prepare for a final struggle, not endless negotiation and constructive programmes alone.
Gandhi and the group around him felt Bose was moving too far, too fast, and in the wrong direction.
The working committee made it clear they would not work with him.

Bose did not cling to the chair.
He resigned from the Congress presidency.
He walked away from the highest post in the largest political organisation in India.
Power was available.
He left it because he believed the nation’s freedom required a different path from the one the party was willing to take at that moment.

That decision says everything about the man.

He then formed the Forward Bloc and kept pressing for uncompromising struggle.
When the war began and the British tightened control, they put him under house arrest in Calcutta.
In January 1941 he escaped.
Disguised, he slipped out of India, travelled through Afghanistan and the Soviet Union, and reached Germany.
Later he made the long journey by submarine and other means to Japanese-held Southeast Asia.

There he took charge of the Indian National Army.
He turned prisoners of war and Indian expatriates into a disciplined force.
On 21 October 1943 he proclaimed the Provisional Government of Free India.
He gave the soldiers a clear purpose.
Delhi Chalo.
The road to the capital ran through battle, not through further petitions.

The INA fought in the difficult terrain of Burma and the Northeast.
They did not defeat the British Army.
Japan was already losing the larger war.
But the INA did something that moral pressure alone had not done.
It showed that Indians would take up arms under their own leadership and fight the empire directly.
When the captured INA officers were later put on trial in the Red Fort, the public anger that followed told the British how deeply the idea of armed resistance had taken root.

Bose never saw free India.
Three days after Japan announced its surrender, the plane carrying him crashed on 18 August 1945.
He suffered terrible burns and died the same evening.

The news was met with disbelief across India.
Rumours that he had survived refused to die for decades.
Several commissions examined the evidence.
The official position remains that he died in that crash.
The debate continues because the figure of Netaji had already become larger than any single official account.

What cannot be debated is the choice he made in 1939.

He held the presidency of the Congress.
He had mass support.
He could have stayed, compromised, and kept the position.
He left because he judged that the nation’s need for a harder struggle mattered more than his own place inside the party.

That is rare in politics.

Most leaders adjust themselves to the organisation.
Bose adjusted the organisation to his reading of the nation’s need, and when that became impossible he walked away.

On this day we remember the man who resigned power for principle.
The man who built an army in exile.
The man who told his soldiers that their blood would buy freedom.
The man whose death, whether fully settled or still disputed, took place far from the land he refused to see remain colonised.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose did not wait for permission to fight.
He did not hold on to office when office conflicted with what he believed the country required.

That is why his name still carries force.

Jai
