That should have made journalism less important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, it has made good journalism more important than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because there is a fundamental difference between being able to speak to the public and being willing to answer the public.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians present their vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists examine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians announce achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists ask whether those achievements match reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That relationship can be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is also essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every politician eventually develops a circle around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Advisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Party workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Communication teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social media managers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Well-wishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People who genuinely believe in the leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is nothing wrong with having loyal people around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem begins when loyalty becomes agreement with everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A political leader who hears \u201cyes\u201d often enough can eventually stop noticing the questions outside the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every speech becomes successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every announcement becomes historic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every social media post becomes a breakthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every criticism becomes a conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And every uncomfortable question becomes an attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is when a political bubble begins to form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And political bubbles are dangerous.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Because elections are not fought inside party offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Governments are not judged inside press conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And citizens do not live inside social media timelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They live in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists often spend considerable time in that world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They talk to people politicians may never meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They visit places politicians may visit only during campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They hear complaints that never make it into official briefing notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They hear praise that never appears in government reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They hear frustration before it becomes a headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes, they notice a political problem before a political organisation does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imagine a political leader preparing for an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The internal team presents research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The communication team presents campaign numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The social media team presents engagement figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The party workers report enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything looks positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then a journalist covering the constituency asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut why are people still angry about unemployment?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That question can be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It forces the campaign to investigate something it may have overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the concern is exaggerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it is concentrated in one demographic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it is genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the government has addressed it but failed to communicate the response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the policy itself needs improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whatever the answer, the question has created an opportunity to understand reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is what good journalism can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It doesn’t necessarily provide the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can help politicians discover the question they should have been asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This distinction is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political communication has a legitimate purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Governments need to explain policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political parties need to communicate their programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leaders need to defend their decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Citizens need information about what their representatives are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But communication begins with a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalism begins with a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A government might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have launched a major new programme.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow much will it cost?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The government says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMillions of people will benefit.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow many have actually benefited so far?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The government says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe economy is performing strongly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhich indicators support that claim?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Neither side is necessarily wrong for doing its job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The government is communicating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist is scrutinising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The public needs both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians naturally appreciate positive coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyone does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But positive coverage is not always useful coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist who writes flattering stories may make a politician feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist who asks difficult questions may make a politician better prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is an important difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suppose a journalist points out a weakness in a policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The politician has several choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Attack the journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dismiss the criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or investigate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fourth option is the most productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the criticism is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it is partially correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then fix the weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it exposes a serious problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then address it before it becomes bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criticism is information when you know how to use it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the biggest mistakes in political communication is measuring success by the number of positive stories generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That can create a dangerous illusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ten favourable headlines do not necessarily mean ten problems have been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A hundred thousand views do not necessarily mean a hundred thousand people agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A trending hashtag does not necessarily represent public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A packed rally does not necessarily predict an election result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A viral speech does not necessarily translate into votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political strategy requires something deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It requires understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are voters actually thinking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are they worried about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are they discussing with their families?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What issues matter enough to influence their vote?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which promises do they remember?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which ones do they distrust?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which groups feel represented?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which groups feel ignored?<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What has changed since the last election?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists can be an important part of finding those answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not the only part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But an important one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political organisations increasingly depend on data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Polling, surveys, constituency research, demographic analysis and digital analytics can reveal important patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But numbers have limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A survey can tell you that public dissatisfaction has increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist who has spent weeks in that constituency may be able to tell you why<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The difference matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the issue isn’t unemployment in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe it is the closure of one local factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the issue isn’t healthcare spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the problem is that the local hospital has no specialist doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe voters aren’t angry about a national policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe they are angry because their road has been broken for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Numbers identify patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People explain them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And journalism often sits between those two worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political leaders often focus on national media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n National newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Major digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But some of the most valuable political information can come from journalists working locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A district reporter may know which villages are angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A city reporter may know which neighbourhoods are changing politically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A regional journalist may know which issue is suddenly dominating conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A local reporter may know the history behind a political dispute that never makes it into a national headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is especially important during elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n National politics can create one narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Local politics can create another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A voter can admire a national leader and still reject the local candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A voter can dislike a national party and still support its local representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politics is rarely as simple as the national headline suggests.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The rise of direct political communication is one of the biggest changes in modern politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians can now bypass traditional media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That has many benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It reduces dependence on gatekeepers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It allows leaders to communicate directly with citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It enables rapid responses during crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It allows governments to explain policies without waiting for editorial cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But there is a downside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every political organisation now has the ability to create its own media environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A party can publish only positive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A government can highlight only successful programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A campaign can amplify only favourable reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Supporters can repeat the same message thousands of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Algorithms can then create an illusion of consensus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician can look at their social media feed and genuinely believe everyone agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, people outside that digital ecosystem may be discussing something completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why independent journalism matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can provide another window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the window shows something politicians don’t want to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s precisely why they need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every successful political movement develops a narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps it is about development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps nationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Narratives are powerful because politics is not just about policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is also about meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But every narrative should be tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist’s job is partly to ask whether the story matches the evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If a party says it represents young people, journalists can examine youth unemployment and political participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If a government says a policy has transformed rural life, journalists can visit rural communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If an opposition party claims a system has failed, journalists can examine whether the evidence supports that claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where journalism becomes more than reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It becomes a mechanism for testing political narratives against reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not always easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists can make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can get facts wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can misinterpret statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can produce unfair coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can have ideological preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are human beings, not machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But that does not mean every journalist who criticises a politician is biased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nor does a journalist’s criticism automatically make it correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mature response is to separate the journalist from the argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Is the fact correct?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Is the criticism fair?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Is there evidence?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What am I missing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What does the public actually think?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If the criticism is wrong, correct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If it is right, learn from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If it is complicated, investigate further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The worst response is to reject the criticism simply because it is uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This becomes even more important during a crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Communal tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Public safety incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Economic shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Political controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During such moments, governments need to communicate quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But they also need accurate information coming back from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalists can sometimes reach places before officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They speak with affected communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They document what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They identify gaps between official statements and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A government that listens to credible reporting can sometimes respond faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A government that dismisses every critical report as hostile propaganda risks losing valuable time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a crisis, that difference can matter enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is another side to this conversation that is often ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Independent journalism does not only hold politicians accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can also protect them from false claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a political environment filled with edited videos, fake screenshots, manipulated statistics and misleading narratives, politicians themselves can become targets of misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A credible journalist can investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Verify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Provide context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Correct the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That benefits everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Good journalism therefore does not simply make politicians uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it prevents political misinformation from becoming political reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is an important line here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Building relationships with journalists is healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trying to control journalism is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician should be able to call a journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Have tea with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explain a policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Share background information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Correct an error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Offer access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Have a disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then accept that the journalist may still write something critical the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is how it should work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist does not owe the politician favourable coverage because they had coffee together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And the politician should not expect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If anything, the journalist’s independence is what makes the relationship valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If a politician only wants journalists who agree with them, they aren’t looking for journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are looking for public relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trust does not mean agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist can trust a politician to provide information and still write a critical article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician can trust a journalist to report accurately and still strongly disagree with the final piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is professional trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist knows the politician will answer difficult questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The politician knows the journalist will not deliberately distort the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The journalist can challenge the politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The politician can challenge inaccuracies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Neither side expects the other to surrender independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is a much healthier relationship than political friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another mistake is contacting journalists only when an election is approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suddenly everyone wants interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyone wants coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyone wants a headline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyone wants \u201crelationships with the media.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n By then, it is already late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Good political relationships are built before they are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A conversation over tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A discussion about a policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An exchange of views about the changing political landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist sharing what they are seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician explaining what they are working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No prepared statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No immediate demand for coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those relationships can become incredibly valuable during a campaign or a crisis because there is already a foundation of professional familiarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is one question I believe politicians should ask more often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat are you hearing that I am not?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat are people saying about me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhy didn’t you cover my achievement?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWho is giving you this information?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat are you hearing that I am not?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That question changes the entire conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It turns journalism from a publicity channel into a source of intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It acknowledges that no political organisation has complete visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And it recognises something every serious leader eventually learns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can never know your own political environment completely from inside your own organisation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A leader who cannot tolerate criticism becomes surrounded by people who avoid giving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem grows quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First, the leader stops hearing bad news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the team learns not to bring bad news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then mistakes become harder to identify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then problems become crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally, everyone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow did we not see this coming?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Often, the warning signs were there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone just wasn’t listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes that warning came from a journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it came from a voter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it came from an opposition leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The source doesn’t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lesson does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leadership requires the ability to hear information that challenges your assumptions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The media landscape will continue changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Artificial intelligence will change news production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social media will continue reshaping political communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Podcasts will compete with traditional television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Independent creators will compete with established newsrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Citizens will increasingly become both consumers and producers of political information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That makes the journalist’s role more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it does not make it obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In fact, the abundance of information makes verification more valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When everyone can publish, someone still needs to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When everyone can make a claim, someone still needs to ask for evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When everyone can create a narrative, someone still needs to test it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n **The future does not need less journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It needs better journalism.**<\/p>\n\n\n\n The relationship will never be comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nor should it be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist should sometimes make a politician uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician should sometimes challenge a journalist’s reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist should demand evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician should provide it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A journalist should investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A politician should respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The public should watch both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That tension is healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the alternative is far worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politics without scrutiny becomes self-congratulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journalism without independence becomes public relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And democracy without either becomes dangerously fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strongest politician is therefore not the one who has the most flattering headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not the one who has the largest social-media following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not even necessarily the one who receives the loudest applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is the politician who can sit across from a journalist, hear a difficult question, resist the urge to become defensive, and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat’s a fair question. Let me answer it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That is not weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps the greatest political advantage a leader can have is not a newsroom that always agrees with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a media ecosystem they are willing to listen to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because sometimes the person asking the most uncomfortable question is the person giving you the most valuable information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Politicians don’t need journalists to make them look good.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n They need journalists to help them see clearly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And in politics, clarity is worth far more than applause.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Politics has changed dramatically.
