On the afternoon of 6 September 2026 a five storey building in Satya Niketan just came down. Inside were young boys who had left their homes in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other places with only one plan. Study in Delhi. Make something of themselves. Help their families. They did not come here to end up under a pile of concrete and broken beams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around 1.30 in the afternoon the building known as Hostel Daze collapsed while repair work was going on in the basement. It was nearly fifty years old. It stood on a tiny plot of about fifty five square yards. No proper sanctioned plan. No fire NOC. Unauthorised construction that had been allowed to continue for years. By the next day the death count had risen to seven. Twelve people had been pulled out. A few more were still missing and no one could give a clear number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They came with books. They left under rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of the boys living there were outstation students. One of them was nineteen year old Aditya Kumar from Patna. Friends later said he had called for help from under the debris. Families from different states stood outside the site and at the AIIMS Trauma Centre through the night hoping for good news. Some got it. Some did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta went to the site. She ordered a magisterial inquiry and told the police to register an FIR against the owner. She said those responsible would not be spared. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences. Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister JP Nadda offered support. Education Minister Prahlad Joshi spoke to the Chief Minister. The MCD Mayor ordered the sealing of illegal buildings above four floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All of that sounds strong on paper. But statements after a tragedy are the easiest part of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This building did not become dangerous overnight. It was allowed to stand for years in that condition. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is supposed to check these things. The Delhi government is supposed to make sure student housing is safe. Yet year after year old houses keep getting extra floors, basements keep getting dug, and boys from small towns keep getting packed into rooms that should never have been allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why did it take seven deaths for the government to suddenly start talking about sealing illegal buildings? Why were there no regular inspections in an area full of student PGs near Delhi University South Campus? Why is the system always reactive and never preventive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every government that has ruled Delhi has spoken about the youth. Every one of them has claimed to care about students. But when those same students die because of illegal construction and weak enforcement, the response is always the same. Visit the site. Order an inquiry. Promise action. Then wait for the next collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Youth power means nothing if the youth are not safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Satya Niketan is not a one time failure. It is part of a long pattern of ignored rules, political convenience and quiet acceptance that student housing can remain unsafe as long as it is cheap and available. Proper hostel seats are limited. Private rooms are expensive. So boys take whatever they can get. And sometimes what they get is a building that should never have been standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NDRF teams, the fire services and the local police worked through the night with dogs, life detectors and heavy machines. They deserve respect. The families waiting outside the debris deserve the truth. The boys who came here with their dreams deserved a roof that would not fall on their heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They came to study.
They came to rise.
They did not come to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
